You can book a residency with Malia Burkhart through COMPAS or through the Minnesota State Arts Board to teach students K-12 in the arts of puppetry and masks. Funding is available through the Minnesota State Arts Board for schools requiring financial assistance. See http://www.arts.state.mn.us/grants/schools.htm for more information. Malia will come to your school for 1-2 weeks, engaging students in the process of creating their own puppets or masks, developing storyboards, scripts, and sound effects, culminating in a performance. She specializes in working with the academic curriculum, collaborating with teachers to find fun and interesting ways to approach material. Past projects have included English Language Learning (ELL), garden ecology, the iife-cycles of bugs, peace studies, and the biological structure of cells. Students learn a wide variety of skills, wrapped into one experience! Residencies will be customized to fit age and skill level, time-frame, as well as academic subjects. Malia is also available to teach workshops in puppetry or masks for programs, afterschool groups, theater productions, festivals, or events. "Malia makes magic out of everyday materials, stretching the imaginations of the students and teachers with whom she works, creates, and inpires!" ~ Ben Lacina, Curriculum Integration Coordinator, Fred Moore Middle School, Anoka MN.
